How to Import Smart Notebook Files in Contribute Cloud Software

Hello and welcome to this Blog Post edition of #AskAndi. In this post we’re going to look at how we can import Smart Notebook Files into Contribute Cloud Software.

Importing Smart Notebook Files into Contribute Cloud Software

This is something that we get asked a lot. Now Smart have done a fantastic job over the last 10 years of getting you all hooked on Smart Notebook but recently or as of late they they’ve changed the way in which they licensed the product.

There is now an an annual payment for the software and we know that a lot of you are trying to move away from this. What we’ve done with Contribute Cloud is give you a way of bringing your Smart Notebook content into our own software.

I will say that not all of your Smart Notebook content will come across we can only import the non-proprietary elements of your Smart Notebook files. By that I mean things like the text images annotations that you’ve created but if you’ve used anything like a smart widget a clock or a countdown timer a any form of animation that’s all proprietary to Smart. As it is propriatary, that means we can’t bring that across.

What we have is a medium of bringing in I would say around 80% of your Smart Notebook files so you don’t have to recreate all of that content again. So let’s go ahead and take a look at how we do that.

I’m going to create myself a new workbook and I’m gonna call this one smart. We’re going to enter smart as the workbook subject as well and we’re going to  hit create workbook. This then takes me over into the editor and if we remember the editor is a place where I can go and access my files.

I’m going to use Dropbox for this example it’s exactly the same process if you’re using any of the other file storage I just happen to use Dropbox to store all of my own files. I’ve gone in to my folders here and I actually have a couple of demo smart notebooks you can see that I’ve got the notebook file extension.

I’m just going to click on the the file there I’m gonna hit choose and that’s then brought them into my editor and we just put a placeholder icon there in the in the software.

What I’m going to do now is I’m just going to hit play and we’re doing this all live it’s not been pretty processed so now the the system is processing the file into a format that it can read and then it will then appear in the play mode and we’ll be good to go.

We’ve got our Smart Notebook file here the first thing that you’ll notice is that this is kind of a square file and this is because most of your smart boards would have been in 4:3 aspect ratio so that’s more of a square shape than it is the the 16:9 widescreen that you have are most interactive flat panels. It means that you’ve got a bit of extra space in actual real estate either side of the the Smart Notebook they’re there to make use of for annotations.

This is a multi-page document so I can click through my pages here and you can see that I’ve brought across my images my text that’s been inside my Smart Notebook file so it’s very easy to bring that information across. Just remember you’re not going to get all of the functionality that you would have had with the smart widgets because we’re not allowed to bring those across.

You can make use of images text and annotations so that you don’t have to recreate all of that material – pretty useful though!
